A glitch in the system, however, sends him back into the Viking Age. Intent on avenging the chief, Kung Fury has computer whiz Hackerman send him back in time to kill Hitler in Nazi Germany. 'Kung Führer', enters the timeline and remotely guns down the police chief and attacks the precinct through a mobile phone. Years later in 1985, after defeating a rogue arcade machine robot, Kung Fury quits the force when he is assigned to partner with Triceracop, fearing that he would lose another partner in the line of duty.

The full short is plenty funny but the gag goes on a bit too long for pure escapist yuks.Sometime in the early 1980s, Miami-Dade Police Department detective Kung Fury and his partner Dragon apprehend a red ninja in a back alley, but Dragon is sliced in half by the ninja while Kung Fury is suddenly struck by lightning and bitten by a cobra, giving him extraordinary kung fu powers that enable him to defeat his foe. In the end, Kung Fury is little more than a fancier version of its brilliant trailer, which at only two minutes hits all the same jokes in a snappier, more concise package. Adolf Hitler is the bad guy and Fury’s we-couldn’t-be-any-more-different partner is a bipedal British dinosaur named Triceracop.

Extreme exaggerations of pretty much every cop movie cliché you can think of are in there. He’s aided by a keyboard slapping computer nerd who spouts quintessential 80s technobabble and “hacks time” with a Nintendo Power Glove. A spot-on synth score sets the mood for the super cop who drives a Lamborghini and can’t follow orders. The action is creative and over the top but Kung Fury’s greatest selling point is its 80s nostalgia.

The high kicks and physics defying flips are clearly augmented but set pieces like Kung Fury’s side scrolling slaughter of a never-ending queue of bad guys manage to be bonkers but not cartoony. Though mostly they’re for laughs and therefore intentionally ludicrous, the martial arts look pretty smooth thanks to a seamless blend of stunt performers and Sandberg himself, who has some moves. As one would expect, Kung Fury is packed with tons of crazy karate fights, gun battles and explosions. The whole thing is digitally softened and peppered with analog artifacts to complete the 80s VHS aesthetic. It delivers a slick combination of inventive if not quite state of the art CG effects and more greenscreen shots than Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. It’s fun, funny and, for a movie put together by a couple of friends in a garage for about $600,000, pretty impressive. The movie is a spoof of and homage to American action movies of the 1980s, specifically the gonzo exploitation variety. If you’re not sold by this point, I can’t help you.
